A Sign of My State of Mind
Paper and cardboard, 10" x 7", 2025
The sign points to a state of mind that I have upon returning home and going on a family vacation, where life slows down and I feel fully immersed in my comfort zone. The sign's design draws inspiration from the flower wreaths commonly given in Indonesia to celebrate or mourn significant events, such as weddings, store openings, birthdays, or the passing of someone dear. I want to express the duality of this experience: one side celebrates my achievements in studying here in Canada, while the other mourns the loss of my comfort zone and teenage years. Both aspects relate to my current state of mind because, even though I am living my dream of studying abroad, it has also made me yearn for this state of mind, my comfort zone—where life is less frantic and free from deadlines. Inside the sign, there's a pamphlet that offers others a way to experience this state of mind through sight, hearing, and smell. For sight and hearing, I've included a barcode that links to a music video by the singer Kelela. For smell, I have sprayed a perfume that embodies this state of mind.
